Students majoring in any BS program in the Department of Teaching and Learning that leads to initial teacher certification are eligible for a generous scholarship toward full-time study in any master’s degree in the same department.
Eligible master’s degree programs include:
- Bilingual Education
Our degrees in Bilingual Education are designed to prepare prospective and practicing teachers, researchers, and future educational leaders with a firm foundation in language and literacy development and applied linguistics. Including a substantial field-based component, our programs are based on communicative methods of language development and a reflective model of teaching that incorporates collaboration with colleagues, students, and communities.
- Childhood Education
Examine critical education issues and gain the skills and experience to thrive as a teacher in today’s urban classrooms. Our Childhood Education program prepares teachers who recognize the capacities, strengths, and needs of all children and their families in urban settings.
- Early Childhood Education
- English Education
Prepare to become a skilled English language and literature educator for middle and high school students through course work and student teaching.
- Environmental Conservation Education
Gain an understanding of the profound effects of human activity on the planet, and the role of education in solving environmental problems.
- Foreign Language Education
Our programs in World Language Education are designed for prospective and practicing teachers of world languages, heads of departments, supervisors, and directors of world language programs in local and international contexts. Our programs prepare you with a firm foundation in the target language, language and literacy development, and applied linguistics to meet the needs of students from diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds.
- Literacy Education
Study techniques for teaching reading and writing skills to pre-kindergarten and elementary students, including supportive strategies for diverse learners. Not accepting students.
- Mathematics Education
Prepare for your mathematics teaching career by learning pedagogical strategies and math content, and gaining hands-on experience through student teaching.
- Social Studies Education
Through a history-based curriculum and hands-on student teaching, prepare for a career as a social studies teacher who inspires students to be active citizens.
- Special Education
Prepare to teach young children at different developmental stages and with varying capacities and needs through course work and field experiences.
- TESOL
The programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) are designed to prepare practicing and prospective teachers, researchers, and leaders with a firm foundation in applied linguistics and language and literacy development to meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Including a substantial field-based component, our TESOL programs are premised on the integration of theory and practice and a reflective model of teaching that incorporates collaboration with colleagues, students, and communities.
Steinhardt’s Scholarship for Advanced Study covers approximately 30% of graduate tuition, and may cover more depending on the program of study to which you apply and availability of external funds.
Please note that only On Campus Master’s programs qualify for the Scholarship for Advanced Study. The Teacher Residency Program Master’s are not eligble Master’s programs for this award.
To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:
- Apply for admission in your senior year by the published deadline to the graduate program of your choice
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
- If admitted, enroll full time in the MA program to which you were admitted
- Submit the Scholarship for Advanced Study form.
- International students are eligible for this scholarship

Apply for Admission
- Apply for admission to the Teaching and Learning MA program of your choice by the program’s deadline. All programs accept applications for the Fall term and some also accept applications for the Spring or Summer terms.
Apply for the Scholarship and Submit your FAFSA
- All candidates must submit a short online Scholarship for Advanced Study form. This form tells us of your intent to continue on for your master’s degree and lets us identify you as a student eligible for this special scholarship.
- US citizens and permanent residents must complete a FAFSA form. All students applying for scholarships from the Steinhardt School must file a FAFSA form. The FAFSA may also make you eligible for the federal TEACH grant, loans, and other forms of financial aid to cover your graduate school expenses.
